Hace 25 años, en marzo de 1988, combatientes cubanos, angolanos y namibios le propinaron una aplastante derrota al ejército sudafricano del apartheid en la batalla de Cuito Cuanavale en Angola. Esa victoria, proclamó Nelson Mandela, futuro presidente de Sudáfrica, marcó un hito en la historia de la lucha por la liberación de África austral .Con la victoria en Cuito Cuanavale se aseguró la soberanía de Angola. Se ganó la independencia de Namibia. La lucha revolucionaria en Sudáfrica recibió un gran impulso. Y la Revolución Cubana también se vio fortalecida.
Entre 1975 y 1991 unos 425 mil cubanos prestaron servicio como voluntarios en Angola en respuesta a la solicitud del gobierno angolano de ayudar a defender ese país recién independizado de múltiples invasiones por el régimen supremacista blanco de Sudáfrica, apoyado por sus aliados en Washington y otros países.
